Course Outlines and Forms

In this post you will find links to course outlines for each of the courses I am teaching this year (click "read more"). Students and parents/guardians should review the course outlines and department policies together so that they have a sense of what to expect this semester, along with what will be expected of students. All students are expected to bring a signed copy of the Course Outline Agreement Form & Media Release Form to class on or before Friday, August 31. One important note for Tuesday: shoes are not permitted in the Drama classroom. We had some trouble enforcing the use of indoor shoes last year, with many students continuing to wear their outdoor shoes in the classroom creating a very messy learning environment for their peers. This year, in order to cut down on time-consuming debates about whether or not one's shoes are "clean," only socks or slippers (not bare feet) will be allowed in the Drama classroom.  Grade 9 Course Outlin

Back to School Prep: Emotional Intelligence

The week before a new school year begins is typically a time for students and families to prepare all the things they will need for a successful academic year. This may include getting back into a school-year routine, gathering supplies, and maybe even reviewing material from last year's classes. One of the very best ways to prepare your child for success in school, however, is something that can be done year-round and that begins at a very early age: teaching your child emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence sounds like one of those "soft skills" that is easy to dismiss in this competitive, technological world we feel we are living in, but, if anything, it is in fact one of the most crucial and often one of the most overlooked ways to prepare our children for such a world. Students with emotional intelligence will likely be equipped with the ability to learn from their mistakes more quickly, as they are able to effectively and efficiently process the emotions

Welcome Back to School: 2018-19

I hope that you have enjoyed your break from school and are ready to return refreshed for a new year of learning. The beginning of the school year usually comes with a mixed bag of emotions, from excitement and optimism to anticipation and even a little anxiety. Just remember that however you're feeling as your return to school this August is OK, and to be aware of how you are adjusting to the familiar routines, challenges, and opportunities of the school year so that you can make the most of this new beginning! I will be keeping a website in addition to using Google Classroom this year to help streamline communication with students and parents. The Classroom page of this site will include information and updates about coursework for both students and parents, with links to Google Classroom for students (remember: students will need to log in to their @gapps.yrdsb.ca accounts in order to access Google Classroom, Google Docs, and other Google Apps for Education resources).
